Details: The coal-fired power plants in Port Augusta are going to be replaced. The question is: what with? We would like to campaign and educate people about Concentrated Solar Thermal, a far more sustainable alternative than a gas power plant, which is the competing option.
More information will be provided closer to the event.
Description: For the Adelaide climate change discussion group’s first meeting they will be discussing Naomi Klein’s recent thought-provoking article, “Capitalism Vs. Climate Change”, published in The Nation, which can be downloaded at http://www.thenation.com/article/164497/capitalism-vs-climate.
They will also be discussing ideas for future meetings, possible readings and topics.
Group Description: The Adelaide Climate Change Discussion Group is devoted to educating activists and members of the public on the science, politics, and policy of climate change. They meet monthly to explore different readings and topics selected by participants, especially those issues and perspectives which are ignored or receive minimal attention from activists, media, and the public, and which are often the deepest, most fundamental issues and questions.
Description: Guest speaker Professor Fran Baum will be discussing some very important research on the profound and pervasive effects that levels of inequality have on physical and mental health, including rates of obesity, suicide, heart disease, lung cancer, domestic abuse, violent crime, and even social isolation.
The public forum is being hosted by the Adelaide Anti-Capitalist Forum and Left Unity.
Description: This year TZM’s annual flagship event will consist of a series of thought-provoking presentations and workshops with a festive late-Summer BBQ atmosphere to keep our spirits up while we indulge our idealistic drive for change. Food for both the body and mind will be served throughout the day!
Protesters from the environmental action group Lock The Gate unfurled a banner reading “No Fracking Way” at the sidelines of the Tour Down Under as a protest against the event’s corporate sponsors, Santos‘ plans for coal seam gas exploration. In the blink of an eye an official car arrived to rip the banner from the hands of the protesters.
As an attempt to save Santos from any embarrassment it failed since Youtube is everywhere and the clip has since become popular viewing for the Tour Down Under well-drilled anti-ambush squad.
The peaceful protesters from Lock the Gate held discussions with SA police, in the name of transparency, about their intentions to hold a peaceful protest, and declared they had no interest in disrupting the event or doing anything which would place cyclists in danger.
The behavior of the people who ripped away the banner and sped off shows a complete disregard for the right to freedom of speech.
Santos is largely responsible for ‘fracking’ down under – and people have a right to voice their concerns given the environmental issues surrounding coal seam gas and the fracking processes.
The next national organization meeting will be as follows:
Sunday 29th January 2012
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm EST
Location: Teamspeak – TZM Australia room
Please feel free to attend. Meetings are open to all for the sake of transparency (they are also recorded). Due to limited time generally only organizers/coordinators speak, although if there is limited traffic and/or you have something important to share then there may be an opportunity to do so during the meeting. Otherwise there will be an opportunity for general discussion once the business side of the meeting is over – all members are invited to participate in this. For agenda items please check this link to a google-doc.
The main focus of the next meeting will be plans for Z-day 2012 – planned for Saturday 17th March. Time is short and plans need work – so please chime in with your ideas as and when they come up!
Happy New Year from the team at The Zeitgeist Movement Australia!
Our first offering of 2012 to the awakened community is the latest issue of our home-grown magazine, Spirit of the Times.
Issue 3 centres around contemporary economic issues and the concept and process of transition to a much-needed alternative economic zeitgeist. This issue is packed with analytical investigation of how we got to where we are now and solutions for moving forward to a more sustainable future.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together!
Here’s to a sustainable-solutions start to 2012 – may your year bring hope, inspiration and a sense of empowerment.

The next organizers’ meeting is coming up soon – details are:
Date: Sunday – 15th
Time: 6pm-8pm EST
Location: Teamspeak – Zeitgeist Australia room
This meeting will be open to the public, meaning that anyone can listen in. However, as is also the case with international meetings, only coordinators/representatives will be able to speak during the meeting due to time constraints (with 11,000 members it has the potential to get chaotic!), although if there is low traffic others will get a chance. Once the business part of the meeting is over (8pm) there will be ample opportunity for all present at the meeting to continue their discussion and chip in their 2-cents’ worth, so those who did not have a chance to speak before can do so then
The Zeitgeist Movement Adelaide Chapter is starting the first Australian based mini RBE community. The community as it is at present can accommodate 10 to 12 people and it is located 30 minutes away from Adelaide CBD by public transport.
The intention is to refine the project and make it self sustainable regarding the production of electricity, water and most food. After this is accomplished, the community will expand to accommodate more people.
Currently the community counts 5 people, and is looking for one or two more members to join the community any time after February 2012. These people would ideally be committed to this project on a long term basis. Skills required within the community include:
Electrical
Plumbing
General Construction
Applied sustainability practices and technologies
Permaculture
For people interested in joining this project please contact us.
