on 23 of October Sydney meetup the following question was discussed, founded by attendees. I encourage forum members to continue it.

Can we use small/abandoned towns to convert them to TVP transition towns? retrofit?

Retrofitting an abandoned/small town would be incredibly cost effective, as we wouldn't have to spend as much to get things implemented, as there is already housing etc.
My big question is actually FINDING a place like this, where the housing/utilities aren't completely destroyed by time/weather.
Would it be worth restoring houses when it would be more beneficial to knock them down and rebuild new, eco-homes? I've seen some designs for synthetic material housing that is MEGA cheap, and then technology could be built around this.
If there is anyone that knows any sites in nsw or nearby, it would be good to let the team know. I would not be opposed to helping get something started during the new year if we do find a place.

hmm its an idea but it doesn't really solve any problems at all- even if its just a transitional town. whilst the suggestion is reasonable, it doesn't address the actual underlying issues.
The problem isn't actually building the cities(this will be one of the easiest tasks) the biggest issue is educating and organizing this new system so when the time comes, earth will be ready to begin implementing this alternative way of life.

If you dumped a whole city of people into a "venus project designed city" it would function exactly the same as the way our society does today, except with better technology and shiny new buildings. Jacque even said this himself. This is why we shouldn't really focus on transitional towns at the moment.
We can focus on things like this at a later stage of the transition phase. I think we should focus on just spreading the word, getting as much attention as possible and educating everyone about this.

But still- it is a good idea , i dont think we have any towns in nsW that are abandoned.

    anyways..thats what i think though...peace.

Well i think that that leading through example would be the best way to put what i was thinking.

We'd have a group of educated people who know all there is about the goals of the venus project to try and establish themselves in a modern, high-quality way of thinking.

It would attract a whole lot of media attention, which would be beneficial in getting the gears going. A little while off, but i can see it happening in the near future.

If the financial crisis tears things apart sooner rather than later then who knows what will happen.

There are 2 ways to approach the venus project idea:

Identify and manage resources and lay over production and distribution systems that suit available resources.

    Or

Identify optimum systems and processes and figure out resources required. (upside down...)

Those are the 2 approached currently for the venus project. I should research them more and go into more detail
