No worries me thinks its a belt drive anyways. If I see one I'll let you know.
No worries me thinks its a belt drive anyways. If I see one I'll let you know.
Thank you for more of your back ground, I would do the same, but mine is not interesting at all. I salovate to the thought of you understanding a lot of things about building that I do not, And I look forward to talking about those things very much.
Down to business
Solar:
For solar power, It really does not cost all that much to do, if you build the panel's your self. and every thing.
You can buy on E-bay 1 solar cell for $1.50 AUD,
Really the only expensive part is a battery bank but once you have it, you have it for years.
In hydroponic drug labs, they use solar panel's to power their farms, so they stay off the grid so the police don't catch them as quick.
( not that I advocate this behaver but it is a very good idea for our own food farms )
Wind:
Nothing wrong with wind at all,
Simple small design's can be built home brewed using old air conditioners and I think washing machines. the barrel styled system can be placed upon roofs great works well,
Larger turbines more hassle but still very much worth it.
Some theory's I came up with today after reading your reply and thinking how I can provide you with idea's with labor theory's.
Area mapping:
Mapping around your area, with neighboring land if they allow will help in the growth process, Though I am unsure of what you really want to do with the land as a overall goal, I will be assuming...
- Assumtion
That you would like to build a self sufissiont community on the land.
If you would like to do this, then I would suggest looking outward, because if you don't want to stay a small community you will need more land to grow outwards.
While I was putting my thoughts on how to make a new education system,
I got side tracked and thought more on what you said and some idea's came out.
If people really do plan to build small communities they will need tools to do so.
to be truely surfisiont, a good way to do this is to make the tools them self,
While thinking of this, I rememberd your shed.
I thought, if any zeitgeist has old tool's, no need for their tools any more,
put them into storage in your land, as what would become of them, chapter's then could remove thoes tools at will to build what they need too, be it a shed for all of ZM chapters,
Things that need to be made like solar panels, hydro setups, tools, machines, could be built by members staying there, on top of this, job references could be given to those that worked on the tools, and the ones working in the chapters projects.
My theory on this deepens, as I want to build rammers,
to make rammed earth home,
but as I live in a "middle sized" city, I don't have the space or the tools I need,
and I don't know any one that does have the tools I need.
-Hydroponics:
I am guessing you have never seen a hydroponic drug lab and how much they can produce.
Instead of useless drugs, you could make a lot of food.

Because the lights are on all the time, means the plants will
always grow they love it.
-(unless dies after food is harvested, not recommended for this way of farming.)
Nutrient water makes the fruit/veg even better all year round, the space saving is just great for many reason's,
-Opinion-
Waisted space is bad design why build across taking away from other things,
when it is in our ability to build down and up, We don't think the earth is flat any more,
why should we farm and build like it is flat?
Once the "Z shed" was to be created, and food stocks made,
plant as much as you can, make so much food
and then share it outside of the community,
-Theory-
Plant 100%
Eat 50%
Replant 25%
Give away 25%
-Opinion Theory-
Its ok to give some one TZM/VP DVD!
but it is not ok to give them fresh food for the week if we have it in abundance?
Z shed:
Center for skill based learning, Provide video information of what TZM/VP is,
work groups, field groups, hands on farming/tool building.
for a place where people can not only experience the Venus Project, they can help build it, and understand it is within our hands and minds.
Modular housing could be built around the shed for people to stay in while building,
Past that rammed earth boarding house's could be made once the tools are in place.
or other styles of course.
Stock piling Chapter members old/used tires, later could shred them up and put them into roads or other things.
Summation:
I don't believe in thinking small acting small,
Only thinking huge, and covering all aspect's,
Small communities and the problems I see with them:
-Less global interaction
-Closed farming
-Closed power generation
-Closed production when every thing is completed
-Small plans for the future
-Temptations outside for younger generations to leave
-Less people moving in
-Money driven access into this style of community
If you don't build with large growth in mind, growth will never happen.
What is the use of any small community with out growth opportunity.
If you only want people that think like the people all ready in the community.
They all think it should never change from the idea of: work hard on the land.
It will never become place for all because its only suited for the people there now.
and not people in the future, children there will want the other things in life in
that a city can offer but a small town cannot
Why do you think most people live in cities, and younger people move from smaller towns to cities. Because of growth and opportunity's.
Please don't get me wrong, Do it if it makes you happy, and as I said before
I want to help you achieve your goal's with any thing you might need that I can provide.
-Peace.
Hi again Phem,
Thanks again for your input
I am quite familiar with hydroponics, and I agree that hydroponics cultivation is extremely efficient, and is something I plan to do. The majority of drug labs use them indoors mostly because of the need to conciel what they are doing, as it is much more costly to set up.
Their is no doubt that being able to produce more light is beneficial to plant growth, and my choice would be to use both natural and supplementary lighting. I am a little rusty on my knowledge, so don't quote me, but plants grow at an optimum depending at what stage they are at, with around 20hrs of light. By manipulating the light exposure times and other things such as nutrients, temperature and humidity you can manipulate flowering and fruiting to occur faster or slower if desired within certain ranges of course, some plants can even be manipulated into producing a second crop and third crop. A technique known as stressing is commonly used on orchards that tricks the tree's in believing they are going to die, and hence they produce a monster crop thinking it is their final chance to reproduce. This method can't be used every season though, its called stressing for a reason.
Greenhouses with supplementary lighting, and thermo-siphoning to control temperature would be very efficient and also give great control over crop production. All would be of course managed by a computer. The initial designs I have in mind would allow each technology to be added as I could afford it.
Thanks for mentioning the rammed earth building, it was something I had never looked into as I had always thought that it was not structurally strong enough for many things. After a little investigating now realize that it is suitable for more structures than I originally thought. I will definitely investigate more, and am already convinced that it would be by far the best method for any structure up to a certain size.
If you need any construction advice feel free to ask, the methods used in ramm earth are in principle identical to the formwork I do everyday. Once again thanks again for re-introducing me to the idea.
Big dreams and small steps is more apt for how I wanted to end my last post. Small steps can be integral into the flexibility idea. I don't believe a VP could be built on a large scale perfectly at the first attempt. Smaller functioning actual life models will be the foundations from which the grand plan can be derived, Once again from my construction experience, I have seen many projects go balls up over issues that were never thought of, and I am talking about relatively large structures with teams of engineers. It is just a fact of life that there will always be unthought of problems, no matter how well planned and how many experts you have at hand. Smaller models will be where a lot of lessons are learned, and help avoid problems in a bigger scheme.
P.S love the idea fo the Z shed, peaple could apply for materials and tools and out line what they plan to make. The community could vote yes or no for the project based on the availabilty of the material and the purpose of the project.
Great I am really excited by the idea of Z shed, and what you said about it is exactly what I was thinking too,
Yeah I've been raving about rammed earth things to my friends,
currently we are planning out a small fruit/vege farm on my mates land, there is just 3 of us at the moment, but I plan to be starting a chapter in my town and
hopefully people will join, and we can grow as much food as we can, to feed all of us and more.
For shed's and things I want to do rammed earth mainly, to get practice at it, because later on in life (as we all are still in our 20's )
we can build our own homes in this way.
I am sorry I don't really have many idea's today had a very stressful day,
If you are growing a lot of food, when it comes to collecting the food,
have some "rail" style carts so that you don't have to use some thing with a lead engine near your food.
or a simple design of a thin channel of water, and a small "kanu" styled vessel that you can pull with a rope making it easier on the trasport from Farming to drying or freezing or pickling what ever you might be doing with the food.
We plan on making a rail system later on, with a solar powered motor to pull the cart up and down, seeing we will be building on a slight incline, going down will be easy but up, with a full load of food would be harder by hand/push cart.
Food Cart:
I was thinking we will use PVC pipe filled with concrete build 6 wheels under the cart, and have 4 metal pipes down the sides of the cart at each end,
then have at the bottom of the pipes attach some half PVC pipe some rough side of a velcrow strip glued inside the half pipe, and put that on top of the PVC that has concrete in it, it's purpose will be to guide the cart up and down the rails attach a chain to a wheel at the top around a spool,
motor attached ezy transport up and down the field, and removal of all the food from the farming land, into the cleaning/producing area.
Ramming tool design:
we gather up old COMPUTER hard drives, open them up take out the diskette,
they have a strong rare earth magnet inside them, and they are shaped just to what we want in a electic (brush and brushless) motor,
Now we take that connect the drive motor to a gear, gear turns connects to another gear facing up, that gear has the bottom ramming plate and a pipe sticking up, put that on the end of the vertical gear, now, put casing around it a strong hollow metal pipe for the handle, now we run power cable to the motor down the pipe, and we
run that cable into a 5 or 6 battery pack, connected to 4 32 cell solar panels,
and we have a operational rammer, that has all most 0 impact on the earth...
if you know what I mean. ^_-
I wish we had the ability here to upload plan's and drawings so I could show you better,
Random idea:
Also I have had thoughts of putting electro-magnets in cat's eyes in the road, to give off a magnetic field and build a on board computer in a car, to read that magnetic field, and it could judge where you are on the road and use GPS as another point to guide the car with out input by the driver, also every cats eye would have its own solar panel on the side of the road, to power it all, and feed any excess power to the grid.
Though I know google have all ready designed a template that only use's GPS, but
Google is partially owned by the pentagon in the US... blah blah.
Z shed:
Like I said before I truly believe in it, Because to me it is just like a libery for tools IMO,
And to me, VP is a lot like a libery, We borrow so much from the community but we always give it back (just never let your house mate borrow your libery card sheesh)!@~
When it comes to material's we do need a place to store them all, because we need to really start with that whole "resource based" theme, I see a lot of things about it,
but no real idea's so far of how to do it.
I believe if we modify this website into some thing more than it is now this can be done, In fact I will make a new thread proposing this now with some of the idea's I had for my own website.
Summation:
I agree small step's focused future and action,
Don't forget the basis why we started,
Also I just want to mention this as I just did it today,
At target you can buy little solar powered lights for the garden,
My Uncle got them for Xmas a year or more ago, and they stopped working,
And he gave them to me, all you need to do is replace the battery in them with a new high quality rechargeable battery, but the ones he had were broken,
So i took the top off now I just use them as small mood LED lighting also I recharge my Xbox 360's AA battery's in them at the day time, so I don't have to plug in the battery charger and use my power company's energy.
-Peace.
