Hi Stu, nice little collection of links. I've just started to look into 'getting off the grid' as something a lot of ZMers seem very interested in doing as a first step. I've even got a few people interested in ZM & TVP through self sufficiency related websites etc. I'm starting to think there might be some value in putting together some general info as well as state-specific info so I'm going to be paying a lot of attention to these links. Thanks again and here are some I've stumbled on:

Hermit Blog A great little blog about a guy from the US who is building his own off-grid home
CERES I volunteer here at CERES eco village, a model of urban sustainability in Melbourne
FreeCycle I am subscribed to the Melbourne FreeCycle group and I've already picked up lamp shades, a trolley and a bed FOR FREE - this initiative in particular is right up our alley as the rules stipulate NO PAYMENT - not even bartering.
Collaborative Consumption is a book promotion in essence however there are great links on the main page of this site to other DIY/ off the grid initiatives

A few more links for anyone who might be interested:
Transition Network - All about transition towns, a very interesting concept
    Australian Sustainable Living Foundation
No Impact Project - Inspired by the recent docco, "No Impact Man"
Living Off The Grid - Content rich blog, check the archives for lots of very good ho-to's

Well I hope someone out there finds this useful. If anyone is reading this and checking these links I'd like to know so I'm not wasting my time posting here.

    Hi to all
I have just been looking around the forums to see all the most recent posts and not a lot of activity has been of late. Some winter hibernation. Conversation is Education so I thought I might try and spark up some dialogue around the forums by dropping in and saying hi!
TZM membership has reached over the 400,000 mark, so it could be said we have over 400,000 sources of information from many & varied professions and life experiences,
We need to talk often about it, because there is a lot to be said and learnt.

What I am suggesting is a "LIFE RESOURCE DATA BASE" for the ease of sharing of information that has/is to do with the challenges we all face day to day and beyond as we prepare for the transition.

Let me suggest by draughting my own entry to such a database.

    dowell.
Self-suffient communities. Aviation. Art & photography.
Each being a sub heading to more detail.

From this heading all interested members could share valuable details to those looking for answers.

It’s about connecting and networking with each other,

SO! Are there any members out there that could and would like to create such a database?????

    Be well Do well

There are many ways to become self sufficient, to be ready for a global economic collapse BUT we shouldn't buy into it as if it's a done deal.
By raising the consciousness of humanity many of these scenarios can be avoided.
But what of the POOR, how does a pensioner who can't feed him/herself set up a "bug out" kit ?
We should approach the possibility of a global economic collapse "as a community" so that those who aren't in a position to protect themselves are looked after.
Unfortunately this sense of community and ethics has been removed by the dumbed down education systems that exist in many parts of the West.
During the Depression of the 1920s people had ethics, preferring to beg for work rather than just expecting handouts, only a tiny minority resorted to thievery while most worked together to help each other. The coming depression (if it arrives) won't be like that, there is a generation that believes that it is deserving of all the good things of life without having to contribute towards its creation, they'll be the ones to watch out for.
